Frequently
Asked Questions

These are the questions that most students have before registering for the course. Please read over these before asking for more information. All NAMS advertising is done via computer.

Q.  Is NAMS an accredited mortuary college?
A.  No, NAMS is written for beginners to funeral service. It is written in an easy to read format, that everyone can understand. The purpose of NAMS is twofold…. First, to prepare newcomers with no knowledge of funeral service for careers as a CERTIFIED MORTUARY TECHNICIAN, and second, to prepare those going on for licensure to compete in college. NAMS is also excellent preparation for those in states where you can do a two year apprenticeship for a funeral director only license.
Q.  Can I make payments instead of paying in full?
A.  Yes, look on REGISTRATION page. You can choose to pay $49.95 down as your first payment and then make 9 additional monthly payments of $49.95 each. Total = $499.50.
Q.  How long does it take to complete the course?
A.  Most people take 4-6 weeks, but you can go at your own pace.
Q.  Can I put this on my GI BILL education plan?
A.  No, we do not accept GI assignment.
Q.  Can I call the school with questions?
A.  Yes, we are here to help. Over the twenty years we have offered the course we have continually updated, and included answers to questions we received from students. We provide all students with an 800 number to call with questions.
Q.  Do you offer a resident program?
A.  No.
Q.  Can I assist a licensed embalmer?
A.  Depends on your state. In New York no. In Colorado you can embalm by yourself. Every other state falls in between. In many countries there is no such thing as an embalming license.
Q.  How can I get practical experience with a home study course?
A.  We give you an ID card identifying you as a NAMS student. At the end of lesson five we give you instructions on how to use your card to get experience at local funeral homes.
Q.  I have been told that everyone in a funeral home needs a license. Is that true?
A.  Two-thirds of all funeral home employees are non-licensed. NAMS helps you get that job. Many corporations prefer highly trained technicians.
Q.  Can I direct funerals with a licensed funeral director?
A.  Absolutely. And you will be ready to work on day one. You will know how to take a death call on the phone, how to arrange a funeral, write a death notice, pick up remains at a home or hospital and many more activities. Won’t you new employer be impressed when you tell him you replaced the half-couch Batesville on the selection room floor.
